On the occasion of International Workers’ Day, the Telangana government has announced good news for gig workers. A new law aimed at protecting workers in the gig sector has now been approved and is set to come into effect soon.

The “Telangana Platform-Based Gig Workers (Protection of Labour and Regulation of Employment) Bill 2026” has received approval from Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla. The official gazette notification is expected to be released on May 1, while detailed guidelines may take another two weeks.

This development has brought happiness among gig workers across the state. Worker associations have thanked the government led by Revanth Reddy for taking this step.

According to estimates, there are around five lakh gig workers in Telangana, including delivery workers and cab drivers. The new law aims to provide them with job security and social protection. It includes registration of workers, setting up a welfare board, accident and health insurance, and other benefits.

The law also proposes fixing minimum wages for gig workers and ensures they receive fair compensation for their work. It states that platform companies must share at least 50% of their earnings with workers. Additionally, workers cannot be removed from their jobs without a valid reason.

The law is also expected to provide benefits like gratuity and contract protection to gig workers. However, some platform companies may raise concerns over certain provisions in the law.

With this move, Telangana is set to become the second state in India after Rajasthan to introduce such a law for gig workers. Rajasthan had passed a similar law in 2023, but it is yet to be fully implemented, leaving many workers without benefits.

Experts say Telangana’s step could become a model for other states and improve the lives of gig workers by giving them better financial and social security.
