In a proud moment for the Indian diaspora, Dr. Ghazala Hashmi, an Indian-origin Democrat, has been elected as the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, defeating Republican candidate John Reed by a wide margin.
Ghazala Hashmi currently represents Virginia’s 15th Senate District and holds the distinction of being the first Muslim and South Asian American woman ever elected to the Virginia Senate. Her victory marks another milestone in her remarkable political journey — from the streets of Hyderabad to one of the highest offices in the U.S. state government.
From Hyderabad to the United States
Ghazala Hashmi was born in 1964 in Hyderabad, India, to Zia Hashmi and Tanveer Ahmed Hashmi. She spent her early childhood in Malakpet, at her grandmother’s home, before moving to the United States at the age of four along with her mother and brother.
Her father later completed a PhD in International Affairs and served as a university professor.
Hashmi earned her Bachelor’s degree with Honors from Georgia Southern University, followed by a PhD in English Literature from Emory University. After her marriage, she moved to Richmond, Virginia, in 1991 and worked as a Professor at Reynolds Community College for nearly three decades.
Trailblazing Political Career
In 2019, Ghazala Hashmi made history by becoming the first Muslim woman elected to the Virginia Senate. Her dedication to education and public service earned her widespread respect, and in 2024, she was appointed as the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Education and Health.
Her recent victory as Lieutenant Governor is being hailed as a major step forward for diversity and representation in American politics.
A Source of Pride for Hyderabad
Hashmi’s roots in Malakpet, Hyderabad, have made her win a proud moment for many Indians and especially for Hyderabadis. Family members and well-wishers in India celebrated her success, calling it an inspiration for young women around the world.
