New details have emerged in the hijab-related controversy involving Dr Nusrat Parveen in Bihar. Dr Nusrat did not report for duty at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Sabalpur, Patna Sadar, even though she was expected to join on the scheduled day.
There were hopes that her joining would put an end to the ongoing dispute. However, she did not reach the PHC at the appointed time. Earlier, the college principal, Dr Mohammed Mahfoozur Rahman, had told the media that he was in touch with her family and that she would join duty by 10 am. This did not happen, and no fresh statement was issued later. Sources say Dr Nusrat is interested in pursuing MD studies.
A doctor posted at PHC Sabalpur told the media that five to six doctors joined duty that morning. Appointment letters had already been issued by the Civil Surgeon’s office as part of the process. Dr Nusrat Parveen’s name was also on the list, but her appointment letter had not reached the PHC. Officials said they were unsure whether she would join that day.
Meanwhile, the Jharkhand government has made a job offer to Dr Nusrat Parveen. Jharkhand Health Minister Dr Irfan Ansari announced an offer with a monthly salary of ₹3 lakh, accommodation of her choice, and government housing. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) said women are treated with dignity in the state.
The hijab-related incident involving Dr Nusrat has sparked a political storm across the country. Opposition parties have accused the Bihar government of insulting a Muslim woman doctor. The issue has drawn widespread reactions, with many calling the incident inhuman and shameful.
Dr Nusrat Parveen, a postgraduate student at Government Tibbi College, Patna, has not attended college for the last four days. The college principal said she spoke to her close friend and expressed concern that the matter was being blown out of proportion. There is speculation that she is emotionally disturbed after the incident.
The situation continues to be closely watched, as political reactions and public debate around the issue show no signs of slowing down.
