The Telangana government has given the green signal for the construction of an iconic bridge over the historic Mir Alam Tank, one of Hyderabad’s oldest reservoirs. The project aims to transform the area into a stunning tourist destination with world-class facilities.
According to official sources, the bridge will stretch 2.5 kilometers from Shastripuram to Chintalmet, near the Bengaluru National Highway (NH-44). The four-lane bridge, estimated to cost ₹319 crore, will be developed by KNR Constructions Ltd. under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model. The tender was officially approved by the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (MRDCL).
Inspired by Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has instructed that the new bridge be designed on the lines of Singapore’s world-famous Gardens by the Bay. It will not only ensure safety and convenience for commuters but also provide a visually striking experience for visitors.
To enhance tourism, the government also plans to develop two islands located within the Mir Alam Tank. These islands, covering 5 acres and 2.5 acres respectively, will feature attractions such as:
- Bird Paradise
- Artificial Waterfalls
- Convention Centres
- Adventure and Theme Parks
- An Amphitheatre
Authorities are also planning to resume boating services that once operated between Mir Alam Tank and Nehru Zoological Park, reconnecting both destinations as a single tourist circuit.
Historical Importance of Mir Alam Tank
Before the construction of the Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs, the Mir Alam Tank served as Hyderabad’s main source of drinking water. The tank was named after Mir Alam Bahadur, who served as the Prime Minister of Hyderabad during the reign of the third Nizam, Asaf Jah II.
The foundation of Mir Alam Reservoir was laid on July 20, 1804, and the construction was completed on June 8, 1806 — making it one of the oldest reservoirs in India.
