Ahead of Eid al-Adha, large-scale smuggling of Indian cattle into Bangladesh has reportedly increased from border areas of West Bengal and Northeast India.

According to reports, thousands of cows and buffaloes are being illegally transported daily through the Sylhet border route into Bangladesh. As a result, cattle markets in Bangladesh are said to be filled with Indian animals.

Local residents in border areas have alleged that smugglers are receiving support from some police personnel and influential individuals, allowing the illegal trade to continue openly. They claim that cattle are being moved across the border at night through secret routes, while security monitoring remains weak in several areas.

The arrival of low-cost Indian cattle in Bangladeshi markets has reportedly caused anger among local farmers and livestock traders there. Traders say that the smuggled animals have reduced the prices of local cattle, leading to heavy financial losses for farmers.

Economic experts believe that this illegal trade is affecting the economies of both countries. On one side, governments are facing revenue losses, while on the other, legal trade and the local livestock industry are being damaged.

People from border regions have demanded stricter surveillance, strong action against those involved in smuggling, and an impartial investigation into the alleged role of police and administrative officials.
