The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections are likely to be held in February, according to sources. The Telangana government is considering conducting the elections after February 10, when the current GHMC council’s term comes to an end.
Officials said the government may issue the election notification anytime after February 10. There are also strong indications that GHMC will be divided into three separate municipal corporations.
As per available information, one corporation may have around 150 wards, while the other two corporations could be formed by merging nearby municipalities and other urban bodies. The existing 150 GHMC wards have already been increased to 300 as part of the restructuring process.
The government has cleared major hurdles related to ward delimitation. Recently, the Telangana High Court dismissed more than 60 petitions filed against the ward division. The court clearly stated that it would not interfere in the delimitation process.
Officials revealed that GHMC received over 10,000 objections during the ward delimitation exercise. Proposals are also under review to change the names of 40 wards and modify the boundaries of 10 wards.
The last GHMC elections were held in December 2020, and the current GHMC council was formed in February 2021. With its term ending soon, preparations for the next elections are now gaining momentum.
