Communal tension has escalated in southern Nepal after a mosque was attacked, damaged, and a copy of the Holy Quran was allegedly desecrated. The incident took place in parts of Birgunj in Parsa district and Dhanusha district, leading to strong protests by the Muslim community. The situation later turned violent, creating fear and unrest in the region.
According to reports, the tension began after a video circulated on social media, which many people said hurt religious sentiments. Soon after, a mosque located in the Sakhuwa Maran area of Kamala Municipality in Dhanusha district was targeted. The mosque was vandalised, and reports of Quran desecration spread quickly, triggering anger and grief among Muslims.
Large protests broke out in Birgunj, where clashes occurred between protesters and police. Stones were reportedly thrown, and demonstrators gathered in front of a police station. To control the situation, police used tear gas. The administration has imposed a curfew in Birgunj and nearby areas and deployed additional security forces.
Due to the seriousness of the situation, the India–Nepal border has been completely sealed. Movement of civilians has been stopped at border points, including Raxaul, with only emergency services allowed. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has increased security checks at sensitive locations such as the Maitri Bridge.
The unrest has also affected Indian workers living in Nepal, many of whom have started returning home. Local residents say that markets and shops in Birgunj are closed, and an atmosphere of fear prevails.
The attack on a mosque and the alleged desecration of the Quran have been widely condemned. Such acts against religious places and holy books deeply hurt communal harmony and pose a serious threat to peace in the region.
There is a strong call for the Nepal government to conduct a fair and transparent investigation, punish those responsible, and ensure the safety of religious places. Leaders and citizens from all communities have been urged to maintain peace, as communal hatred and violence help no one.
