In April 2025, a news story captured the attention of people across Maharashtra. It was a historic moment. The final results of UPSC 2024 were announced, and Maharashtra got its first Muslim woman IAS officer. The daughter of a humble auto-rickshaw driver from a small village in Yavatmal had achieved one of the country’s most prestigious positions. The news spread rapidly and brought joy to people across the state.
A Father’s Pride and Struggle
Adiba Anam belongs to Yavatmal district in Maharashtra, a region often mentioned in the news because of farmers’ hardships and economic challenges. Her father, Ashfaq Ahmed Sheikh, works as an auto-rickshaw driver, while her mother is a homemaker. She also has two younger brothers. The family has always lived with limited financial resources.
Despite these challenges, Adiba achieved her dream of becoming an IAS officer. Speaking proudly about his daughter, her father says:
“People are proud of their sons, but my daughter has brought honor to my name.”
He adds that he never treated his daughter differently from his sons.
“My daughter was intelligent from a very young age. I recognized her talent early and decided that I would provide her with the best education possible, no matter how difficult our circumstances were.”
Ashfaq Ahmed says the journey was not easy. The family faced social pressure, criticism, and emotional stress, but he never allowed those things to affect his daughter’s education.
“Our only goal was to educate her and help her become an officer.”

Education and the Road to UPSC
Adiba completed her primary education at a Zilla Parishad Urdu Primary School in Zafarnagar. Later, she finished her schooling from a government institution in Yavatmal. She was always an outstanding student, especially in mathematics. She achieved excellent results in both her Class 10 and Class 12 examinations.
For higher education, she moved to Pune and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Azam Campus.
During her graduation years, she developed an interest in civil services. She realized that becoming a civil servant would allow her to contribute to society and solve people’s problems. After years of preparation and hard work, she finally succeeded in her fourth attempt, securing All India Rank 142 in the UPSC examination.
Family Support and Life in Pune
Adiba’s father could not complete his own education due to personal circumstances. However, he was determined that his children would not face the same difficulties.
Education was always the family’s top priority. Despite financial struggles, her father never allowed poverty to stand in the way of her dreams.
Adiba Recalls:
“Even when our financial condition was very difficult, my parents never asked me to quit my studies. Many people advised me to get a job. Around me, many students left education and started working. But my parents never pressured me to earn money and always encouraged me to continue my studies.”
Moving from a small town to a large city like Pune was challenging. Living alone, managing accommodation, food, transportation, and studies required great effort. Being away from family was emotionally difficult, but her family remained her strongest support system.
She says:
“We live in a male-dominated society, but my family never differentiated between sons and daughters. They loved and supported me just like my brothers and always encouraged me to dream big.”
From Failure to Success
Like many UPSC aspirants, Adiba’s journey included setbacks. Her first two attempts were unsuccessful. In one attempt, she even reached the interview stage but narrowly missed the final selection list.
Instead of giving up, she started again with renewed determination.
Managing the financial burden was a major challenge. Later, she joined the Hajj House IAS Training Institute and Jamia Residential Coaching Academy in Delhi. The guidance provided by these institutions, combined with her strong determination, helped her move forward.
Adiba also shared an interesting experience from her UPSC interview. During the personality test, the interview board asked questions about her background and social issues in Maharashtra. They particularly asked what changes she would like to bring as a woman officer.
Her clear vision, confidence, and thoughtful answers left a strong impression on the panel.
Eventually, she cleared all stages of the examination and became an IAS officer.
A major reason behind her success was consistency and disciplined study. She studied for eight to ten hours every day. Reading newspapers and preparing notes became a regular part of her routine.
Adiba’s Message to Young Girls
According to Adiba, patience and consistency are essential for success.
She says:
“It took me four attempts to achieve my goal, which tested my patience. But patience alone is not always enough. Sometimes people face injustice, and remaining silent is not the right choice. In such situations, we must raise our voices instead of simply waiting.”
Her success has become a source of inspiration for girls from minority communities and rural areas.
Sharing a message for young girls, she says:
“No matter what your circumstances are, always dream big. Never move away from education. What matters most is not your surroundings but how focused you are on your goal. Work hard, stay consistent, and believe in yourself. Success will surely come.”
She concludes with these inspiring words:
“Aim for the moon, and you will reach the stars. If you want to achieve something in life, learn to dream big. Everyone should have a purpose in life so that even after they are gone, people remember them for their good work.”
Through civil services, Adiba now wants to work for underprivileged sections of society, especially for girls’ education. By overcoming tremendous challenges, she has proved that even a girl from an ordinary family can rise to become a district collector and inspire an entire generation.
