A powerful explosion near the Red Fort in Delhi today killed at least eight people and injured 24 others. According to police, the blast took place in a car parked near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station.
Eyewitnesses said the explosion was so strong that several nearby vehicles caught fire, and parts of human bodies were seen scattered on the road. One eyewitness told NDTV, “It was horrifying. I saw body parts lying on the street. The fire and smoke were everywhere.”
Soon after the blast, around 20 fire engines and multiple ambulances reached the spot. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Early reports suggest that the explosion caused heavy damage to nearby buildings, shattering windows and glass doors.
A resident living close to the site said, “I saw a huge flame from my rooftop. The sound was extremely loud. I live near the Gurdwara and immediately ran downstairs.”
Delhi Police’s Special Cell and the Bomb Disposal Squad have sealed the entire area and are investigating the nature of the explosion. Traffic in the old Delhi area has been diverted to prevent congestion.
Some eyewitnesses claimed that it appeared as if more than one car was involved in the blast. The explosion site is only a few hundred meters from Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib and about 1.1 kilometers from Jama Masjid.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the blast and have appealed to citizens to stay calm and avoid spreading rumors.
