Can the Cockroach Janta Party Turn Into a Major Mass Movement?

On Saturday, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) organized a protest at the famous Jantar Mantar site in New Delhi. The demonstration was called by the social media account “Cockroach is Back,” which has gained more than 20 million followers within just a few days.

The protesters unanimously demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The CJP has also given the government a one-week ultimatum to act on this demand.

This has raised an important question: What will be the next step for the Cockroach Janta Party?

Some political experts describe the movement as immature and directionless, mainly because it lacks an experienced leadership team. However, others believe the issues raised by the group and the public support it has received suggest it could have a promising future.

In a conversation with Media, CJP spokesperson Sourav Das said that if their key demands are met, the group’s future course of action will be decided collectively.

“We will all decide together what comes next. This is a platform for young people facing difficulties and challenges,” he said.

For now, he added, their primary demand is that Dharmendra Pradhan resign or that Prime Minister Narendra Modi ask him to step down.

Does the Protest Prove CJP’s Popularity?

According to Sourav Das, the large turnout at the protest is proof that people support the movement.

“We expected a large gathering. Some people could not attend because they were in other cities, but the response confirms that our movement is moving in the right direction,” he said.

There has been debate on social media regarding the exact number of participants. According to Media reporters at the scene, hundreds of people attended the protest.

Another spokesperson, Abhishek Ranka, claimed that while organizers did not count the crowd, the number was easily in the thousands.

Senior journalist and political analyst Sharad Gupta said the gathering at Jantar Mantar reflects public dissatisfaction and anger toward the current system.

However, he believes the existing political system still holds advantages. According to him, the ruling party has maintained strong engagement with young people, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has frequently addressed youth-related issues, including examinations and education.

Because of this, Sharad Gupta does not believe CJP can currently become a movement on the scale of those led by V. P. Singh, Jayaprakash Narayan, or Anna Hazare.

Why Some Analysts Are Optimistic

Senior journalist and political commentator Smita Gupta believes the movement has emerged at a time when public enthusiasm for the Modi government has begun to fade.

She argues that people are increasingly frustrated with economic challenges and broader national issues.

According to her, it is too early to say whether CJP will become a major political movement, but she believes it has significant potential.

Unlike many previous movements that focused on broad ideological issues, she says CJP’s concerns are directly linked to the everyday lives of young people and their families.

As an example, she referred to the student-led movement associated with Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, and Shehla Rashid at Jawaharlal Nehru University.

She explained that those movements focused on larger themes such as democracy and freedom of expression. While important, such issues do not always affect ordinary citizens in a direct and personal way.

In contrast, she says the concerns raised by CJP are likely to resonate with both young people and their parents.

She also mentioned the protest movement against the Citizenship Amendment Act protests, particularly the demonstrations at Shaheen Bagh, which she believes had significant potential before being disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Can CJP Become a Major Political Movement?

Many movements lose momentum once their immediate demands are met. This raises the question of whether CJP can develop into something larger.

CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka believes the movement is only beginning.

He said young people face many problems, and whenever attempts are made to discuss these issues, attention is often diverted toward religious or caste-related debates.

For now, he insists the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan remains the group’s central demand.

However, analyst Sharad Gupta argues that although the protest reflects public frustration, the chances of it becoming a serious political movement remain low.

According to him, the movement lacks a clear strategy and is currently channeling youth anger without offering a defined direction.

“This anger is focused on Dharmendra Pradhan today. Tomorrow it may be directed at someone else,” he said.

Concerns About Leadership

Some analysts point to the inexperience of the movement’s leadership as a major challenge.

Sharad Gupta noted that none of the three main spokespersons have significant political experience, making it difficult for the organization to transform into a large-scale movement.

Political strategist Yogendra Yadav offered a different perspective. Writing on social media platform X, he said it would be a mistake to judge CJP using traditional political standards.

He described it as a unique moment of public energy rather than a conventional political organization.

“Cockroach Janta Party is not really a political party. It is simply ordinary people coming together. It is not a movement; it is a moment, and that is why it matters,” he wrote.

Will CJP Enter Electoral Politics?

When asked whether the group plans to enter politics, spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka replied that everything in society is political.

“The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the schools where we study are all political. So what is political and what is not?” he asked.

Sharad Gupta believes there is a possibility that CJP could eventually follow a path similar to that of Arvind Kejriwal.

When Kejriwal first launched his anti-corruption movement, many doubted that activists could successfully enter electoral politics. He later proved otherwise by forming a political party and contesting elections.

Gupta says a similar transformation cannot be ruled out for CJP, although he believes its current leaders appear relatively inexperienced.

How Does CJP Define Itself?

Speaking to the media at Jantar Mantar, Ashutosh Ranka described CJP as a pro-youth, pro-education, pro-Constitution, and pro-India organization.

When asked whether it was a social campaign or a movement, he replied that people could call it whatever they wished.

“It is a gathering of young people. It is a youth movement,” he said.

He was also asked whether the name “Cockroach Janta Party” would be changed in the future.

Ranka responded that the name originated as a sarcastic label about 30 days ago but had since gained a broader meaning.

Why Was CJP Created?

CJP founder and convener Abhijit Dipke told Media that the idea began after he saw comments online comparing young critics of the system to cockroaches and parasites.

The remarks upset him, prompting him to express his views on social media.

He then posed a question: “What would happen if all the cockroaches came together?”

According to him, the response from Generation Z and young people under 25 was overwhelming. Many suggested creating a common platform where young people could unite and raise their concerns.

The strong turnout at the recent Jantar Mantar protest has intensified the debate over whether CJP can become a lasting political force. For now, many observers agree with Yogendra Yadav’s assessment: it may not yet be a full-fledged movement, but it has become a significant moment in India’s political conversation.
