Deadly Drug Trend in Hyderabad: Rising Youth Addictions Now Claiming Lives

Hyderabad | December 4, 2025 | DeccanLive.com

Drug misuse among youth is becoming a major concern in Hyderabad. While the city is already struggling with ganja and drug abuse, cases of young people dying after taking excessive doses of painkillers and injections are increasing.

In the latest incident, two auto drivers — Jahangir Khan and Irfan Khan — died in Chandrayangutta on Wednesday after taking high doses of painkiller injections to get intoxicated.
These medicines are supposed to be sold only with a doctor’s prescription, but many medical stores continue to sell tablets and injections without any checks, putting public health at risk.

Even though authorities issued 234 show-cause notices and suspended 165 licences between August 22 and September 15 during statewide raids, illegal sales have not stopped.

Online Videos Teaching Drug-Making

Since ganja and drug prices are high, some youngsters are choosing cheaper options like painkillers, sleeping pills, injections, and steroids.
Videos on the internet are teaching how to mix certain tablets and injections to make drug-like substances. Some users even inject painkillers dissolved in saline water directly, which is extremely dangerous.

Recent Incidents

  • Ahmed Ali, a mobile repair shop owner from Kalapathar, bought drugs at Lakdikapool on November 10. He consumed them in excess with friends and collapsed. He died after bleeding from his nose.
  • On April 19, a 17-year-old Intermediate first-year student from Balapur died while undergoing treatment. He had injected himself with painkiller tablets dissolved in saline.

Authorities and health experts warn that unless strict action is taken, the growing misuse of painkillers and injections will continue to endanger young lives in the city.
