Zohran Mamdani is set to become the new Mayor of New York City as the new year begins in 2026. The celebrations will continue through New Year’s Day with two separate oath-taking ceremonies.

Mamdani’s Democratic team has planned a small and private oath ceremony at midnight on Thursday. This event will take place with his family at a historic, old subway station located inside the City Hall building.

Later in the afternoon, a larger public event will be held outside City Hall. The ceremony will include a street celebration where members of the public can attend.

It is a long-standing tradition in New York for newly elected mayors to hold two oath ceremonies, as their term officially begins with the New Year. Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams had taken his first oath at Times Square shortly after the famous New Year’s ball drop. Before him, former Mayor Bill de Blasio took his first oath at his home in Brooklyn.

Mamdani will take his oath for the first time at the former City Hall subway station in Manhattan. This station is one of the city’s original underground transit stations and is known for its tiled arches and vaulted ceilings.

The oath will be administered by New York Attorney General Letitia James.
