A fresh controversy over the hijab has emerged in Kerala after a school reportedly stopped a Muslim student from entering the campus while wearing it. The issue sparked protests from parents and students, eventually forcing the state government to step in.
According to media reports, the incident took place at a CBSE-affiliated school run by the Latin Catholic Church. A Muslim girl was allegedly prevented from entering the school premises because she was wearing a hijab. The student claimed she was stopped at the gate and told to remove her headscarf before joining the morning assembly.
The move immediately triggered anger among parents of Muslim students, who staged a strong protest against the school administration. Citing safety concerns and pressure from staff, the school announced a two-day closure.
Kerala Education Minister V. Sivankutty quickly intervened in the matter. He directed the school to allow the student to continue her education while wearing the hijab, stressing that her religious rights could not be violated. The minister also sought a detailed report from the school authorities regarding the incident.
“The student has the right to attend classes wearing the hijab. Students’ rights are protected under the Constitution and education laws,” the minister said, highlighting the importance of upholding constitutional freedoms.
The school’s action has drawn sharp criticism from several quarters. Minister Sivankutty reminded schools that while students must follow uniform regulations, institutions should not attempt to police personal clothing choices or religious practices.
The controversy has once again put the spotlight on the sensitive issue of dress codes, religious freedoms, and constitutional rights in educational institutions across the country.
