7 Dead in Stampede at Haridwar’s Temple After Electric Shock Rumor

Haridwar, 27 July – (www.deccanlive.com): At least seven people were killed and many others injured in a stampede on Sunday at the steps leading to the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar.

According to officials, the tragedy occurred at Ram Prasad Gali, the starting point for the climb to the famous temple. The area was overcrowded due to the holy month of Sawan, when thousands of devotees visit daily after taking a dip in the Ganga.

Police said the stampede began after rumors spread that people had received an electric shock on the temple steps. Panic ensued, and devotees rushed to escape, leading to chaos.

SSP Pramendra Singh Dobal told ANI that police received information around 9 AM and quickly rushed to the spot. “We immediately moved 35 injured people to the hospital. Sadly, six were declared dead initially, and another succumbed later,” he said. He added that the cause of the panic is still under investigation.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the incident, announcing ₹2 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured. He has also ordered a magisterial inquiry.

Dhami posted on social media, saying: “This is a very sad incident. SDRF, local police, and rescue teams are working on the ground. I am in constant touch with the administration and monitoring the situation.”
