In a major political development ahead of the upcoming Jubilee Hills by-election, sources say the Telangana Congress is preparing to induct Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy into the state cabinet. The decision is reportedly part of the party’s plan to fulfill its earlier promise to Rajgopal Reddy and address his growing dissatisfaction in recent weeks.
At the same time, the Congress high command has already finalized former Indian cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin for a ministerial post. Both leaders are expected to take oath when the Telangana Cabinet expansion takes place on October 31.
According to reports from the Secretariat, Azharuddin’s induction was proposed by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and approved by the party leadership in Delhi. Currently, there are no minority representatives in the Telangana cabinet, and Revanth Reddy has been keen to include one for some time.
Several leaders from the minority community — including former minister Mohammed Shabbir Ali, Feroz Khan, and Azharuddin — were considered for the position. However, given Azharuddin’s earlier contest from Jubilee Hills, where he narrowly lost, the party believes his inclusion will help strengthen its presence in the constituency, which has a significant Muslim voter base of over one lakh.
Additionally, the Congress leadership expects Azharuddin’s appointment to improve its prospects in the upcoming local body elections. The Telangana cabinet currently has three vacant positions — one is set to go to Azharuddin, another likely to Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy, while the third may be allotted to a Backward Class (BC) leader.
Official confirmation regarding the appointments is expected within the next 24 hours.
