Gandipet Mystery: Hyderabad Unable to Use Available Water Due to Pending Pipeline Works

Even as Hyderabad’s drinking water needs continue to grow, a large amount of usable water from Osman Sagar (Gandipet) is going to waste. The reservoir, located close to the city, has a full storage capacity of 3.9 TMC, but the Water Board is using only 1.45 TMC per year.
Officials say that the city can receive up to 25 MGD (million gallons per day) from Gandipet. However, only 19 MGD is currently being supplied, leaving a considerable amount of water unused.
To increase supply, the Water Board planned to lay a new 14.5 km parallel pipeline next to the existing conduit. But the work has been stalled for the past eight months due to a lack of ₹600 crore required for the project.
If the new pipeline is completed, Hyderabad will be able to use an additional 25 MGD of water from Gandipet, which can help meet the rising demand in the city.
