A tragic accident took place in Agra on Tuesday after six children drowned while bathing in the Yamuna River near Balkeshwar Temple. Four children lost their lives, while two were rescued safely.
According to police, the children had come to attend a birthday celebration at Vidyapuram in Agra. The birthday was for Nitya, daughter of Saurabh, a resident of the area. Several relatives had gathered for the event.
Due to the intense summer heat, the children went to the Yamuna River near Balkeshwar Temple around 11 am for a bath. While swimming, they accidentally moved into deep water and started drowning.
The victims were identified as Mehak (19), Anshu (20), Kanha (22), Riya (17), and Vicky (11). Most of them had come from Hathras to attend the birthday function.
People present at the riverbank raised an alarm after seeing the children struggling in the water. Local residents immediately informed the police. Rescue teams and divers quickly reached the spot and started a search operation.
After intense efforts, five children were pulled out of the river. Three of them were rushed to SN Medical College Hospital in critical condition, where doctors declared Mehak, Kanha, and Riya dead. Later, the body of missing child Vicky was also recovered after nearly five hours of search operations.
The incident left family members in deep shock and grief. Relatives cried uncontrollably after hearing about the tragedy. Local MLA Dharmapal Singh also reached the spot after the incident.
Vicky’s father Rakesh said that his son was born after many prayers following four daughters. He said the family had gone to attend their niece’s birthday, and the children had gone to the river without informing anyone.
