The US Embassy in Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh was targeted in two drone attacks on Tuesday morning, according to a spokesperson for the Saudi military.
Media reports, quoting eyewitnesses, said loud explosions were heard in Riyadh’s diplomatic quarter on March 3. Thick black smoke was seen rising from the area where several foreign embassies and diplomats’ residences are located.
According to Reuters, citing informed sources, a fire broke out at the US Embassy building following the blasts. However, the US Embassy later posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the incident caused only a “limited fire and minor material damage.” No casualties have been reported so far.
The US Mission in Saudi Arabia has issued a “shelter-in-place” advisory for its staff and citizens in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dhahran. It has also advised Americans to limit non-essential travel, especially near military installations.
Rising Tensions in the Region
The drone strikes come at a time of increasing tensions in the Middle East. Iran has stepped up missile and drone attacks in response to recent US and Israeli airstrikes. Reports suggest that some Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, could be at risk amid the escalating conflict.
In a separate warning, an Iranian official reportedly said that any ship attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz could be set on fire. The Strait of Hormuz is a key global oil shipping route, and any threat to it raises serious international concerns.
Security has been tightened across Riyadh, especially in the diplomatic zone. Authorities are investigating the source of the drone attacks.
The situation remains tense as global leaders monitor developments in the region.
