Youth Unemployment Remains Major Challenge in India, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Record High Rates

Rising unemployment continues to be a major challenge for governments across India, especially among young people aged between 15 and 29 years.

According to a recent survey conducted last year, many states have failed to provide enough job opportunities for educated youth. The report said unemployment has become a growing concern over the past decade, and governments have not been able to take strong steps to solve the issue.

The survey found that improving skill development programs and increasing employment opportunities could help reduce frustration among the younger generation. Many youths reportedly feel that promises made by political parties regarding jobs are mostly limited to election campaigns.

The report showed that unemployment rates are especially high in northeastern states and Kerala.

Kerala recorded the highest unemployment rate at 29.9 percent. Other states and regions with high unemployment include:

Ladakh – 22.2%
Punjab – 18.8%
Jammu and Kashmir – 17.4%
Himachal Pradesh – 16.3%
Arunachal Pradesh – 20.9%
Nagaland – 27.4%
Manipur – 22.9%

In the Telugu states, Andhra Pradesh recorded an unemployment rate of 17.5 percent, while Telangana recorded 16.6 percent unemployment among youth.

Other states include:

Tamil Nadu – 15.3%
Rajasthan – 12.4%
Uttarakhand – 9.8%
Uttar Pradesh – 9.1%
Bihar – 9.8%
West Bengal – 9.0%

The survey also pointed out that government jobs are limited, while the private sector offers more opportunities for skilled youth. Experts believe that improving vocational training and creating more employment opportunities are necessary to tackle the growing unemployment crisis in the country.
