A major road accident took place on Sunday evening near Kummangudi in Tamil Nadu’s Sivaganga district, where two government buses collided head-on. The crash was so severe that 10 people died on the spot, and around 20 passengers were seriously injured. The accident happened near Tirupattur, about five kilometres from Pillaiyarpatti.

According to police, people nearby and other passengers immediately began rescue work and helped pull out the injured from the badly damaged buses. One bus was travelling from Tiruppur to Karaikudi, while the other was going from Karaikudi to Dindigul.

Photos from the accident site showed the driver’s side of one bus completely crushed. Videos also showed several bodies lying on the ground in a row. In one clip, a woman was seen jumping out of a broken windscreen, while another injured woman sat on the road with heavy bleeding.

Emergency teams quickly shifted all injured passengers to nearby hospitals. Officials said more information is awaited regarding the exact cause of the accident and the condition of the injured.

This is the second major bus collision in southern Tamil Nadu within a week. Last week, six people were killed when two private buses collided in Tenkasi district, reportedly due to high speed and reckless driving.
