A man who recently joined a jewellery showroom as a salesman allegedly stole 1 kilogram of gold biscuits worth Rs 1.65 crore and tried to escape, but was arrested within 24 hours.
According to Khairatabad DCP K. Shilpavalli, the accused has been remanded to judicial custody. She appreciated the Panjagutta ACP Murali Krishna, Inspector Ramakrishna, DI Nagaraju and SI Suresh for quickly solving the case.
The accused, identified as K. Gopalakrishna from Tadepalli in Andhra Pradesh, had discontinued his intermediate studies. He previously worked as a delivery boy but left the job due to low income. Police said he had fallen into debt and was facing financial pressure as his mother and uncle were unwell.
Two months ago, he joined the Joyalukkas jewellery showroom in Panjagutta as a salesman. With gold prices rising, he allegedly planned the theft.
On February 14, he reportedly took advantage of opportunities during work hours and hid gold biscuits in his mouth before going to the washroom. There, he concealed them in his pant pockets and socks. By night, he escaped with 10 gold biscuits weighing 100 grams each, totaling 1 kg.
To avoid detection, he removed the number plate from his motorcycle and switched off his mobile phone. He then travelled by bus to Vijayawada. Instead of going to his hometown, he stayed in a friend’s room to avoid suspicion and later began searching for potential buyers for the stolen gold.
Meanwhile, the showroom manager noticed the missing gold on February 15 and filed a complaint. Under the supervision of ACP Murali Krishna, police teams examined CCTV footage from over 60 cameras between Panjagutta and Amberpet. They traced his movement to Vijayawada and tracked him using mobile phone signals.
Police arrested the accused and recovered gold biscuits worth Rs 1.65 crore, along with his mobile phone and motorcycle.
The swift action by the police ensured that the entire stolen property was recovered within a day of the complaint.
