Unusual Political Alliances in Telangana: Congress-BJP Join Hands in Aliabad, Congress-BRS Unite in Kamareddy

Several surprising political developments were witnessed during the municipal chairperson elections held across Telangana on Friday. Parties that are strong rivals at the state and national level joined hands in some towns to secure key posts.
In Aliabad Municipality of Medchal district, Congress and BJP came together to form the leadership. The municipal body has 20 wards, where Congress won 8 seats, BRS secured 7, BJP won 3, and two seats were won by others. As no party had a clear majority, intense political discussions took place over the past three days.
Finally, with the support of BJP and other members, Congress candidate Kantham Shirisha was elected as the Municipal Chairperson.
In another interesting development, Congress and BRS — which are major political rivals in Telangana — joined hands in Kamareddy Municipality. Out of 49 wards in Kamareddy, Congress won 19 seats, BJP secured 16, BRS got 11, and three were won by independents.
An independent candidate, Uma Rani, who won from Ward 38, later joined Congress. She was elected as the Municipal Chairperson. Meanwhile, BRS leader Kasarla Godavari, who won from Ward 12, was elected as the Vice Chairperson.
Across Telangana, several municipalities witnessed hung situations this time, leading to intense political negotiations. With no party getting a clear majority in many areas, alliances were formed with independents and rival parties to capture key posts.
These unexpected tie-ups — especially Congress joining hands with BJP in one town and with BRS in another — have sparked widespread political discussion across the state.
