Congress to Get Nizamabad Mayor Post After Alliance with AIMIM

Nizamabad | 15 February | DeccanLive.com
The political uncertainty over the Nizamabad Mayor post has finally ended. Congress and AIMIM have reportedly reached an agreement to form an alliance in the Nizamabad Municipal Corporation.
As per the understanding between the two parties, the Mayor post will go to Congress, while the Deputy Mayor post will be given to AIMIM.
The Nizamabad Municipal Corporation has a total of 60 divisions. In the recent elections, the BJP emerged as the single largest party with 28 seats. Congress won 17 seats, AIMIM secured 14 seats, and BRS won one seat.
Since no party secured the required majority, the corporation witnessed a hung situation, leading to intense political discussions. Despite winning the highest number of seats, BJP fell short of the magic figure needed to form the leadership.
With the support of AIMIM, the Congress-led alliance now has 31 seats. In addition, ex-officio votes have also played a role. BJP MP Dharmapuri Arvind, Nizamabad Urban MLA Dhanpal Suryanarayana, and Armur MLA Paidi Rakesh Reddy are entitled to vote, increasing BJP’s strength by three votes. On the other hand, Nizamabad Rural MLA Dr. Bhoopathi Reddy and MLC Mahesh Kumar Goud support Congress, adding two more votes to its tally.
Even after excluding the lone BRS member, the Congress–AIMIM alliance is expected to reach 33 votes, ensuring victory for the Mayor post.
Meanwhile, the Congress party is yet to finalise its Mayor candidate. Several women corporators are in the race, including:
- Panchareddy Lalitha (21st Division)
- Kuragayala Uma Rani (49th Division)
- Bombothula Pujitha (41st Division)
- Dumala Arundhati (12th Division)
- Ketavat Surekha (9th Division)
Interestingly, all five contenders are women. Reports suggest that four belong to the BC category and one to the ST category.
With this alliance, Congress has successfully secured the Nizamabad Mayor post, setting the stage for a new political chapter in the city.
