Bihar Police have detained a man who allegedly offered a reward of ₹2 lakh for killing Uttarakhand-based gym trainer and bodybuilder Deepak Kumar, popularly known as ‘Mohammed’ Deepak.

The accused has been identified as Utkarsh Singh from Motihari district in Bihar. He had reportedly posted a video on social media threatening Deepak and announcing the cash reward.

Deepak Kumar Kashyap came into the spotlight last month after he stood in support of a 70-year-old Muslim shopkeeper, Wakil Ahmed, in Kotdwar, Uttarakhand. Members of Bajrang Dal had allegedly confronted the elderly man and objected to the use of the word “Baba” in the name of his shop, Baba School Dress and Matching Centre. They claimed the word had religious significance.

During the confrontation, Deepak defended the shopkeeper. When asked his name in a video that later went viral, he introduced himself as “Mohammed Deepak.” The clip spread widely on social media, bringing him both praise and criticism.

Following the viral video, Deepak said he received several threats from Hindutva supporters. On Sunday (February 8), he filed an FIR with Uttarakhand Police regarding the threats.

Police registered a case under Section 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (criminal intimidation involving threat to life or serious injury).

According to the complaint, the accused, Utkarsh Singh, appeared in the video with a tilak on his forehead and holding bundles of cash. In the clip, he allegedly said that anyone who kills “Mohammed Deepak” and teaches him a “lesson” would be given ₹2 lakh.

Reports say tensions in Kotdwar increased after the incident. On January 31, some Bajrang Dal members reportedly gathered outside Deepak’s gym with the intention of confronting him. He has since been provided police security.

Deepak told media earlier that the controversy has affected his livelihood. His gym, which once had around 150 members, now has only about 15. He said he pays a monthly rent of ₹40,000 for the rented building.

“Half the city is with me, but people don’t clap for good deeds. Honesty comes with a price,” Deepak was quoted as saying.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the matter.
