Hyderabad to Get 24×7 Water Supply: ₹8,000 Crore Ring Main Project Announced

To ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply to all parts of the fast-growing city, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has prepared a major action plan.
Under this plan, a 140-kilometre long Radial Ring Main pipeline will be built around the city. The project will connect major water sources such as Krishna, Godavari, Singur, Manjira, Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar. Along with the ring main, an additional 96 kilometres of connecting pipelines will be laid to supply water to different areas.
The Water Board said the project will be taken up at a cost of ₹8,000 crore.
What is a Ring Main?
A Ring Main is a main pipeline network built to ensure continuous water supply. It is proposed mainly along the Outer Ring Road (ORR). From this ring, separate pipelines will connect various localities in the city.
Why is this project needed?
Earlier, Hyderabad depended mainly on twin reservoirs. Later, Singur and Manjira were added. With rising demand, water is now being drawn from the Krishna and Godavari rivers after treatment.
However, Manjira pipelines often need repairs, and if there is any problem in Krishna or Godavari pipelines, some areas face water shortages. Though the city has multiple water sources, lack of proper interconnection affects supply in certain localities.
Water Board officials said the Ring Main system will help maintain water supply even if repairs or technical issues occur in one area. With Godavari Phase 2 and Phase 3 expected to be operational in the next two years, linking all sources through the Ring Main will make water distribution more reliable.
Key Benefits of the Ring Main Project:
- No disruption in water supply during pipeline repairs
- Supports the goal of 24-hour water supply
- Ensures equal water pressure across all areas
