Telangana Removes Two-Child Rule for Local Body Elections Bill Passed in Assembly

The Telangana Legislative Assembly has passed a bill removing the two-child rule for local body elections. The bill was introduced by Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Minister Seethakka and approved by the House.

Earlier, candidates contesting Panchayat, Mandal, and Zilla Parishad elections were required to have no more than two children. This condition had disqualified many people from contesting elections at the local level.

Before the upcoming Panchayat elections, the state government had already removed this rule through an ordinance. On Saturday, the Assembly gave legal approval to the ordinance by passing it as a formal amendment.

Speaking in the Assembly, Minister Seethakka said that after this change, people with more than two children will also be eligible to contest in Panchayat, Mandal, and Zilla Parishad elections.

Political observers say this decision will expand public representation and allow more citizens to take part in local governance, strengthening grassroots democracy in Telangana.
