Vegetable and Egg Prices Surge in Hyderabad: Eggs at ₹8, Tomatoes at ₹60 per kg

Kitchen budgets are under pressure as vegetable and egg prices have increased sharply in Hyderabad and nearby districts. Common and middle-class families are struggling as even basic vegetables now cost ₹60 to ₹80 per kilogram in local markets.

In open markets, buying vegetables often requires a ₹100 note for just one kilogram. Along with vegetables, egg prices have also touched record levels, adding to the burden on households.

Across markets such as Gudimalkapur, Bowenpally, and Gaddiannaram, retail prices are ₹10–₹20 higher than wholesale rates. For example, tomatoes were priced at ₹41 per kg in Gaddiannaram market, but sold at ₹60 per kg in open markets and malls.

Vegetables like bottle gourd, ridge gourd, and bitter gourd are sold at ₹45 per kg in wholesale markets, but retail prices range between ₹60 and ₹70 per kg. Leafy vegetables like spinach and amaranth, which earlier cost ₹10 per bunch, are now priced between ₹20 and ₹30.

Non-vegetarian items have also become expensive. On Sunday, chicken was sold at ₹250 per kg, while mutton prices ranged between ₹950 and ₹1,000 per kg in Hyderabad retail markets. The price of a single egg has reached ₹8.

Cold Weather Hits Production

Market experts say that severe cold weather across the country has badly affected vegetable production. Low temperatures have reduced flowering and slowed crop growth, leading to lower yields. Vegetables usually grown in December, such as beans, ridge gourd, and bitter gourd, have also seen poor output.

Vegetable supply from states like Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka has dropped due to similar weather conditions. Tomato and chilli crops have suffered damage from cold and earlier heavy rains in September and October, discouraging farmers from a second round of cultivation.

In Telangana, vegetable farming area has reduced by 20–30%, as many farmers shifted to crops like paddy and cotton. Rising costs of seeds and fertilizers have also added to the problem.

Egg Prices Hit Record High

Eggs, considered an affordable source of protein, are no longer cheap. In wholesale markets, the price of 100 eggs has crossed ₹700, a first in recent years. Retail prices now range between ₹7.50 and ₹8 per egg.

Higher poultry feed costs, reduced chicken population due to diseases, and increased winter demand are the main reasons. Vitamin-enriched eggs are selling for ₹10–₹12, while country chicken eggs cost over ₹15 each.

No Relief Before Sankranti

Market analysts warn that prices are unlikely to come down before the Sankranti festival. If cold conditions continue, prices could rise by another 20%. Many residents say even ₹500 is not enough to fill a shopping bag.

People are urging the government to step in and provide vegetables at lower prices through Rythu Bazaars to give some relief to consumers.
