Muslim Leaders Urge Modi Government to Extend Deadline for Waqf Property Registration on UMEED Portal

A delegation from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) met Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Thursday, urging the Central Government to extend the deadline for registering Waqf properties on the Umeed Portal.

The team was led by AIMPLB General Secretary Maulana Fazlur Rahman Mujaddidi. Several key leaders, including AIMIM chief and MP Asaduddin Owaisi, Agha Syed Ruhullah Mehdi (MP), Chandrashekhar Azad Ravan (MP), Mohammed Javed (MP), and Jamaat-e-Islami Hind President Syed Sadatullah Husaini, also attended the meeting.

States Seek More Time for Accurate Records

The Umeed Portal was launched in 2023 to create a digital record of all Waqf properties across India. It includes digital verification, monitoring disputed properties, and coordination with state Waqf Boards.

However, many states — including Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka — have raised concerns that more time is needed. They pointed out issues like old paper-based records, thousands of properties stuck in court cases, and the large-scale work required for accurate registration. Without an extension, they fear that lakhs of acres of Waqf land could face legal and administrative problems.

Leaders Stress Importance of Extension

Maulana Mujaddidi said,
“Waqf properties are a trust of the entire community. Without a proper extension, many properties may get deregulated.”

Asaduddin Owaisi also highlighted the seriousness of the issue, saying,
“Protecting Waqf assets is our constitutional and legal responsibility. Extending the portal deadline will make the process transparent and effective.”

Government Responds

Minister Kiren Rijiju acknowledged the concerns and said the matter is serious and under consideration. He assured the delegation that the government understands the importance of protecting Waqf properties. The Ministry will review technical issues, record updates, and requests from state Waqf Boards before making a final decision.

Sources indicate that the government may take a decision soon.

This joint effort by the Muslim Personal Law Board, political leaders, and community representatives marks an important step in safeguarding Waqf properties. All eyes are now on the Centre’s decision regarding the extension.
