Supreme Court Refuses to Extend Deadline for Waqf Property Registration on ‘UMEED’ Portal

The Supreme Court has refused to extend the deadline for registering Waqf properties on the central government’s UMEED portal, as required under the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025. The Act, passed in the last Parliament session, gives six months for all Waqf properties to complete their registration.
Several petitions were filed in the Supreme Court seeking more time. However, during Monday’s hearing, a bench of Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Augustine George Masih dismissed these requests.
The bench said that anyone seeking relief must approach the Waqf Tribunal directly, as the 2025 amendment clearly gives the Tribunal the authority to decide such matters. The court also noted that the official last date for registration is 6 December.
Applicants Cite Technical Problems
Lawyers representing the petitioners argued that the UMEED portal is facing technical issues, making the registration and digitisation process difficult. They said that by the time the Tribunal hears these complaints, the deadline would already be over.
Despite this argument, the Supreme Court refused to interfere. The bench clarified that if someone is genuinely facing technical difficulties, they can request an extension from the Waqf Tribunal. If the Tribunal approves the request, a fresh six-month period will apply for that specific applicant.
The court made it clear that the responsibility of granting extensions lies with the Tribunal, not the Supreme Court.
