The only surviving Indian in the tragic Madinah bus accident, Mohammed Abdul Shoaib, has been discharged from Saudi German Hospital after his health improved. He is expected to return to Hyderabad on Sunday.
On 17 November, a bus carrying Umrah pilgrims from Hyderabad caught fire near Madinah, leading to the death of 45 pilgrims, including Shoaib’s parents and grandfather. Shoaib, 24, who belonged to the Jhirra Caravan, managed to escape from the burning bus and was rushed to Saudi German Hospital.
Shoaib received treatment in the ICU under the supervision of Dr. Mohammed Nooruddin, a Hyderabad-based doctor working in Saudi Arabia for the past 23 years, and Saudi doctor Dr. Yasser. His facial and leg burns are healing well, doctors said, but he will need regular dressing every three days after returning to Hyderabad.
Doctors Nooruddin and Yasser, along with Shoaib, spoke via video call and confirmed that he is now stable and fit to travel. Police clearance for his discharge has also been obtained.
During his stay in the hospital, Shoaib was looked after by Hajj Committee employee Mohammed Masood and his brother Mohammed Sameer. Both will accompany him back to Hyderabad. Due to his injuries, he will travel in a wheelchair.
Dr. Yasser expressed happiness over Shoaib’s recovery and said he was proud to fulfil his duty as a doctor. He also praised Shoaib for his courage in surviving such a horrific incident.
Before returning to India, officials from the Indian Consulate arranged for Shoaib to visit the Prophet’s Mosque and also the graves of his parents and grandfather in Madinah.
Shoaib thanked the people of Hyderabad and others around the world who prayed for his recovery. He also appreciated the Telangana Government for helping the families of victims travel to Madinah and assisting in identification and burial arrangements.
