The Urdu literary community received heartbreaking news on Friday morning as well-known poet and literary personality Azizuddin Aziz Belgami passed away at the age of 71. He is survived by his wife, three sons, and two daughters. With his passing, Urdu poetry has lost a unique, soothing and melodious voice that touched the hearts of poetry lovers for decades.

Aziz Belgami was born on 1 May 1954 in the village of Kadchi in Belagavi district, Karnataka. From a young age, he developed a deep love for literature and poetry. He was not only an excellent poet but also known for his beautiful, rhythmic voice that would leave audiences spellbound during mushairas. Wherever he recited his poetry, listeners would be mesmerized, and the gathering would echo with appreciation.

He completed his early education at Junaidia High School, Kadchi, and later studied at Bashiban High School in Belagavi. He then pursued higher studies at RLS Institute, Belagavi, and later at Kittel College, Dharwad.

A turning point in his life came when he met the respected spiritual and literary figure Syed Nooruddin Qadri Noor, who greatly influenced his thoughts and literary journey. After this phase, Belgami left formal education and focused on earning a living—but his passion for poetry never faded.

Even while working in a bank, he continued his academic interest and earned an MA in Urdu from Mysore University in 1995 and an MPhil from Bangalore University in 1999. His research work, written under Dr. Meem Noon Saeed, was titled “Atta ur Rahman Atta Habalvi — Fan aur Shakhsiyat” and was later published as a book named “Zanjeer-e-Dast-o-Pa”, which gained wide admiration in literary circles.

Belgami contributed many unforgettable verses to Urdu literature—poetry rich with emotion, pain, love and depth. His death has created a wave of sadness among scholars and poets across India and abroad.

His audio CDs were also widely appreciated. His first CD, “Ghazlein aur Naatein”, featured his own recitation of ghazals and naat. Another CD, “Dua Hai Hamare Paas”, was launched by former Karnataka Urdu Academy chairman Khalil Mamoon. He also recorded a special CD for Urdu lovers in Kerala, featuring poems of Allama Iqbal, recited in his graceful voice.

Literary experts say that Aziz Belgami’s creativity, voice and unique style will continue to guide and inspire future generations.
May Allah grant him forgiveness and give strength to his family and admirers. آمین.
