The GHMC Council meeting turned highly tense on Monday after a clash broke out between BJP and AIMIM corporators over the issue of singing Vande Mataram.
The session had barely begun when the atmosphere quickly heated up. Within minutes, the council hall was filled with loud slogans, arguments, and shouting from both sides. Some corporators even climbed onto chairs while raising slogans.
Seeing the situation getting out of control, Mayor Vijayalakshmi warned that if members did not maintain discipline, she would order the marshals to remove them from the hall. Her warning brought temporary silence, but tensions remained high.
BJP MP Raghunandan Rao asked for permission to sing Vande Mataram in the council, saying that the national song has completed 150 years. The Mayor allowed it and suggested that the Telangana State Anthem “Jaya Jaya He Telangana” should also be sung in honour of its writer, Andesri.
However, AIMIM corporators strongly opposed this move and said they could not support the proposal. As soon as Vande Mataram started, the situation worsened. Several AIMIM corporators, including Syed Sohail of Pathergatti division, remained seated during both Vande Mataram and the Telangana anthem.
BJP corporators reacted aggressively, calling AIMIM’s action an insult to the council and began shouting slogans. This led to further arguments on the floor. The marshals had to enter the hall to control the scene.
The Mayor expressed anger and said,
“Do you want to turn this council into a street fight? Focus on city issues. Stop creating chaos.”
Despite her repeated appeals, the disturbance continued. Due to the ongoing noise and disruption, the Mayor was forced to suspend the meeting immediately. Members continued arguing even after stepping outside the hall.
Officials said the next meeting will be scheduled soon, and stricter measures may be taken to prevent such incidents in the future. Frequent disruptions, they added, slow down important decisions related to public welfare.
During the entire commotion, AIMIM corporators maintained restraint and patience, even as BJP corporators continued their aggressive protests.
