A police inspector posted in Deoband, Narendra Kumar Sharma, has been suspended after a video of his speech during an interfaith meeting went viral. The inspector had said that terrorists can be from any religion, including Hinduism, which led to a major controversy.
The meeting was held at the police station to control rumours spreading after the Delhi bomb blasts. Inspector Sharma had called members of all communities to promote peace and harmony. During the discussion, he said that terrorism has no religion and gave examples of extremists from different communities, including Naxalites and cases reported in the Navy, Army, and Punjab.
However, a short and incomplete clip of his speech was recorded by someone and shared widely on social media. This caused a heated debate, and the video eventually reached Lucknow. After reviewing the matter, SSP Ashish Tiwari suspended Inspector Sharma on Thursday.
Inspector Sharma said he had no intention to hurt anyone’s feelings, and the viral clip shows only a small part of his full address. According to him, the complete video would prove that he did not target any religion.
After his suspension, many people on social media came out in his support.
Former Bajrang Dal state convener Vikas Tyagi praised Sharma’s working style and demanded action against those who edited or misused the video.
International Bajrang Dal district president Vikas Saini also said that some mischief-makers spread the clip wrongly.
Gau Raksha Dal national president Harish Panwar demanded an investigation, claiming the video was clearly tampered with.
