A shocking incident has been reported from a mosque in Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun district, where a young man was allegedly tied to a pole and set on fire after an argument over a place to pray.
According to reports, the incident took place on Friday morning after the Fajr (early morning) prayer. The victim, identified as 20-year-old Mehboob, reportedly had a heated argument with three minors inside the mosque over where to stand during prayer.
Police say that after the prayers, when Mehboob came out of the mosque, the three boys allegedly tied him to a pole, poured petrol on him, and set him on fire. However, the rope caught fire and broke, allowing Mehboob to escape.
He was rushed to the hospital with severe burn injuries. Doctors said that about 70 percent of his body has been burnt, but his condition is now stable and out of danger.
The incident occurred outside a mosque on Sahaswan Road in Budaun. Police reached the spot after receiving a call on the state emergency helpline.
However, there are doubts about the sequence of events. Police officials have found CCTV footage from a nearby petrol pump showing Mehboob himself buying petrol shortly before the incident.
Because of these contradictions, officials say the case is being investigated from all possible angles.
“Investigation is underway, and all versions are being verified,” said Hardeish Kathiriya, Superintendent of Police (Rural).
