Senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] leader and former General Secretary Prakash Karat has accused the Election Commission of India of acting under the influence of the BJP-led central government. He strongly criticized the decision to revise voter lists in 12 states, calling it politically motivated and undemocratic.
Speaking to the media after attending a CPI(M) training camp at Sundarayya Vignana Kendram in Hyderabad, Karat said that the RSS and BJP are working systematically to weaken secularism in India. “They are spreading hatred in the name of religion to serve their political interests,” he said.
Karat urged all secular and democratic forces in the country to come together on a single platform to counter the divisive ideology of the RSS and BJP. He said, “It is time for all secular parties and organizations to unite and raise public awareness against the Hindutva agenda that threatens India’s Constitution and secular values.”
The CPI(M) leader also accused central institutions, including investigative agencies and the Election Commission, of functioning under the directions of the ruling government.
Referring to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, Karat said a similar exercise held in Bihar two months ago led to the removal of many genuine voters from the rolls. He added that even the Supreme Court had raised concerns about the Election Commission’s actions and had not dismissed the petitions filed against the SIR process. “Despite the matter being pending before the court, the Election Commission has rushed into revising voter lists across 12 states,” he said.
Prakash Karat warned that the BJP and RSS are following a clear Hindutva agenda, and minorities in BJP-ruled states are facing growing attacks. He emphasized the need for a nationwide awareness campaign to expose these actions and protect India’s democratic and secular identity.
