Assam CM Threatens to Send Jamiat Chief Mahmood Madani to Bangladesh

Guwahati, Assam – 24 August – (www.deccanlive.com): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has dismissed calls by Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind for his removal, saying he does not care what the Muslim organization wants.

On Saturday, August 23, Jamiat demanded Sarma’s dismissal and a criminal case against him under hate speech laws, following the state’s eviction drive that displaced over 50,000 families, mostly Bengali-speaking Muslims.

Reacting strongly, Sarma said during a program in Morigaon:

“If I ever find Mahmood Madani, I will send him to Bangladesh.”

Sarma also mocked the organization by raising his thumb, declaring:

“This thumb has Assamese blood, strength, and courage. I am officially showing it to Jamiat.”

Attack on Congress and Jamiat

Sarma accused the Congress Party of acting as the “B-team” of Jamiat and siding against the people of Assam.

“The people of Assam elected me, not Jamiat. If anyone attacks the Chief Minister of Assam—be it Congress or another party—we will protest,” he said.

He further criticized the Congress leadership, calling them “leaders of unknown people” rather than representatives of native Assamese communities. Pointing to a recent protest against a new semiconductor plant in Jagiroad, Sarma said Congress leaders had misplaced priorities.

Targeting Mahmood Madani

The Chief Minister also accused Jamiat chief Mahmood Madani of blocking teacher appointments during the Congress rule.

“When I was Education Minister, Madani did not allow appointments of teachers who had passed the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET),” he alleged.

Earlier, Jamiat’s working committee, chaired by Madani, passed a resolution expressing concern over Assam’s eviction drive and urged India’s President and Chief Justice to remove CM Sarma and initiate criminal proceedings against him for hate speech.

Founded in 1919, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind is considered one of the largest and most influential Muslim organizations in India.
