Mohammed Azharuddin Likely to Get Jubilee Hills Bypoll Ticket, Says Minister Ponnam Prabhakar
Hyderabad, 29 July – (www.deccanlive.com): Minister Ponnam Prabhakar has stated that the Congress ticket for the Jubilee Hills Assembly by-election will be given only to a leader who has been actively working in the constituency. Speaking alongside local Congress leader Mohammed Azharuddin, Ponnam said the final candidate will be decided by the party high command based on surveys and internal discussions.
The Congress ticket race has become intense, with names like Azharuddin, Anjan Yadav, Naveen Yadav, Mayor Vijayalakshmi, and PJR’s daughter Vijaya Reddy in the fray. Senior leaders are also showing interest in contesting. Azharuddin, who contested the last election from Jubilee Hills but lost, expressed confidence that the Congress flag will fly high this time.
The by-election was necessitated by the recent death of sitting MLA Maganti Gopinath. While traditions earlier suggested that rival parties avoid contesting in such situations, the bypoll is expected to witness a tough fight.
The BRS, which swept Hyderabad’s core constituencies including Jubilee Hills in 2023, aims to retain the seat with a strong majority to prove its continued hold and counter anti-incumbency sentiments.
